How to Improve Your Aim in CS:GO
by Seif Tarek
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is known for it’s difficulty when it comes down to aiming. There are many methods for improving one’s aim. However, finding the most efficient way to improve your aim is the most important point on this topic. Aim is generally defined by your muscle memory abilities, thus, the aim improvement techniques revolve around the following:
• Deathmatch
• Posture
• Game settings consistency
When it comes to improving your aim, there are many ways in which that can be done. Counter-Strike offers various different game modes and the Deathmatch mode is of those modes which was designed specifically to help improve one’s aim. Deathmatch, is the most common way of aim practice. However, there is a common misconception that aim is all about a person’s ability to keep his crosshair on the head. Aim is not just the ability to flick the crosshair to someone’s head; It is the general feeling of your mouse and controlling it exactly the way you want. Deathmatch helps improve one’s ability of flicking to the head and also improves the general feeling of your arm. Although, Deathmatch is a very useful method for enhancing your muscle memory. It is very important to consider your posture while playing and game settings consistency.
After playing countless hours of deathmatch, you might realise that something is still missing. The feeling of discomfort is not there without an explanation. Even though Deathmatch improves your aiming abilities, your posture should also be taken into consideration. The posture which you take while playing varies from one person to another. For wrist aimers, this probably won’t make much of a difference since their aim does not rely on arm movement. However, for hybrid or arm aimers, the posture is very important to take into consideration. If you are a hybrid or an arm aimer, then slouching down on your chair is not really helpful. In fact, if you slouch down on your chair, your arm will have nowhere to rest in a way that can help you aim with ease. Thus, the height of the chair relative to the desk is important; The best possible position is if your elbow is at table height, slightly below or slightly above that point. Arm positioning is also important to help ease the process of aiming. On one hand, if one’s arm is at the exact middle of the mousepad this will leave space for you to react to left or right encounters with ease. On the other hand, if your arm is too far right or left, this will create a problem depending on where the enemy decides to peek. Deathmatch and posture are two important factors to aim improvement. However, We should also note that keeping your settings consistent is not any less important.
When someone sits down and plays a classic game of Counter-Strike; The moment something goes wrong and that person begins to experience a slump in performance, he would turn to changing his game settings to try and break that slump. Changing the game settings to much is one of the biggest reasons why people take so long to improve at the game. Muscle memory is just like brain memory, as long as you give it the known information it will recall it and if you introduce something new it takes time to adapt to the change. If you change your settings at a point of slump it might break that slump for a short period but on the long run you will encounter an aim inconsistency problem. Keeping your settings fixed even if you are facing a slump is a good way of maintaining good aim while playing. As a player you will encounter problems while sticking to your settings at that time, it will pay off on the long run as it is probably a problem related to movement or maybe your posture while playing. Although, deathmatch and keeping your settings unchanged will improve your aim. Thus, we should highlight the importance of all three of those factors.
In conclusion, the combination of all three factors is essential in order to reach the required level of aim. There is no specific factor which is more important than the other. If you change your settings, then the hours of deathmatch prior to that will be partly gone to waste. If you are not having the proper posture while playing this could cause massive aiming problems and clearly if you do not get sufficient deathmatch practice, then you will experience a slump in your aiming abilities. Therefore, you must play a lot of Deathmatch, maintain a good posture while playing and keep your game settings consistent.
